Our partner GasBuddy shares some tips on how to save some money while traveling this holiday season.
Many people hit the road during the holiday season to visit family, go shopping and attend parties. It’s also the time of year when people spend more money and feel the squeeze on their budget.
Gas prices are trending downward but are still higher than they were this time last year. According to GasBuddy’s annual Holiday Travel Survey, 32 percent of participants said high gas prices were impacting their travel plans. So whether you’re making more local trips or driving long distance, we can help you save more. Worry less about your budget and enjoy everything this festive season has to offer.
1. KNOW WHEN TO BUY GAS
We analyzed gas price data and found that Monday offers the lowest average gas price in 21 states, making it the best day to fill-up. The day with the most expensive average gas prices: Friday.
2. WATCH YOUR DRIVING HABITS
Aggressive driving habits like speeding, rapid acceleration and braking can cost you upwards of $477 per year in extra fuel consumption. Our Drives feature can help you analyze your driving so you can curb these bad habits.
3. JOIN PAY WITH GASBUDDY
It offers 30 cents per gallon CASHBACK in points* on all fill-ups for 60 days, 15 cents per gallon CASHBACK in points on all fill-ups after, plus it’s accepted at gas stations nationwide. Use your CASHBACK in points at ShopYourWay.com to save money on the everyday items you want and need. Join today for free.
4. EAT BEFORE YOU LEAVE
Or consider eating at a gas station convenience store instead of a pricey sit-down restaurant when traveling. Many gas stations now offer areas where you can stretch your legs, grab some food and take a break.
5. PACK WISELY
Forgetting a phone charger or something you need while you’re away can add up. Be sure you make a list and check it twice so you don’t buy things at your destination that you already have at home.
6. PAY LESS FOR PARKING
Are you attending an event or heading to a place where you know parking will be a hassle? Reserve a spot using Park with GasBuddy (currently available in select locations) and you’ll save up to 50% on parking and earn 5% GasBack (that’s free gas). Say “Bah Humbug” to paying full price for parking.
GasBuddy is a company that connects drivers with their Perfect Pit Stop. As the leading source for crowdsourced, real-time fuel prices at more than 150,000 gas station convenience stores in the U.S., Canada and Australia, millions of drivers use the GasBuddy app and website every day to find gas station convenience stores based on fuel prices, location and ratings/reviews. GasBuddy’s first-of-its-kind fuel savings program, Pay with GasBuddy, has saved Americans more than $3.6 million at the pumps since its launch in 2017.
I’m not sure about which gas station merchants Montana has but we have no problem getting our points when we gas up with Shell or Chevron. I guess there’s only one way to find out by just signing up and see which ones work. Worse case scenario, you find out which gas stations work and which doesn’t.
I live in Montana and many national programs to save money do not cover the state very well or at all. Does gasbuddy and Shopyourway work with a high percentage of merchants, if not all of the same merchants in highly populated areas?
Thanks for the good advise.
Pack a couple of sandwiches, you’ll eat better than the people around you, and you can still get the drink of your choice wherever you stop!
But the very best and easiest way to save is to purchase gas cards online for at least 5% off using your cash back credit cards. This gives you gas at the cash price with an additional 7% or better savings.
where do you buy gas cards? like sam’s or costco …
Give us an example Bob.

I live in Lake Placid Florida….would it be possible to have the gas prices e-mailed to me daily?
Why? Wouldn’t it be just as quick and a lot easier to log in to Gas Buddy directly? That’s what I do. Just find and bookmark your preferred Gas Buddy page once, and it’s a one-click deal from there. Here’s how to set it up. 1. Visit Gas Buddy. 2. Find your local page. 3. Bookmark it.
For example, I live a few miles east of Hartford, CT, so I fouind and bookmarked http://www.connecticutgasprices.com/GasPriceSearch.aspx.
