As Pretty as You Want it

Thursday, October 11th, 2012

By Noam Reshef, Community Manager at ShopYourWay

You asked and we listened. After all we do aim to please. So this week we’ve got a couple of new features that make the site prettier – and faster.

Let’s start with the beauty section. The internet is a visual medium, and Shop Your Way is no different. Good looking images make good looking web sites.

To that end, we’ve replaced our old file uploader with a new one, after listening to your feedback. That means that the next time you decide to add a picture to your page, for example, you’ll find the experience much smoother and easier. The end result? Better looking images on Shop Your Way!

Information at Light Speed

Another cool adjustment to the site is adding infographics to pages. Remember those? Beautiful graphics that provide lots of fascinating information about other people’s interaction with stuff you’re interested in?

Well now you can click on an icon in one of your favorite pages and learn how many of the page’s followers are women or men, where most of them come from, the dominant age group etc.

And we’re not just trying to provide you with more info – we want you to get it faster. That’s why we improved our search engine, helping you reach your destination faster.

Enter “shoes” for example, and you’ll find yourself in our shoes category page, instead of the usual search results. Didn’t want to get there? One click and you’re back to the results page. in most cases you’ll discover the system helps you cut the line and get the info you want that much faster.

Lots more coming up. Stay tuned.

Control Your Pages On The Go

Sunday, July 29th, 2012

By Noam Reshef, Community Manager at ShopYourWay

Our Mobile team delivered a couple of really cool features this week. The main element in both of them is controlling your ShopYourWay communication from your iPhone. Not just letting users consume info on the go – but also add it to the app and the site.

The first feature is going to be a hit among you page managers out there: You can now post a status message or image as your page – directly from the newsfeed.

Just click on the post status area and check out the new update status window. Pretty, we know. If you manage a page or three you’ll see a “post as” button on the bottom right. Click it, choose the page you want to post as – and voila. It’ll be published on the relevant page, as the relevant identity. Elegant.

Another important task you can complete from your mobile phone is uploading a profile picture. Having a profile pic really adds personality to your account, and helps other users relate to you. So: go to your profile page on the app, click on the image and upload that great pic of that perfect smile.

Tag that Video

Things are happening on the site as well, naturally. As of now you will be able to add tags to video clips and pictures as you upload them. Try adding one now, and you’ll see a text field dedicated to tagging.

The implications are quite cool – you can now tag a video clip with the public figure appearing in it, or with products relevant to it, In addition to adding it to a catalog. This is a powerful tool that will make the site even more awesome, if that’s even possible.

Enjoy the site (and the app!).

And stay tuned…

The Fast and the Fabulous

Monday, June 11th, 2012

By Noam Reshef, Community Manager at ShopYourWay

The word today is: speed. It’s a fast moving world, and we aim to not only keep up – we want to be in the lead. The common theme of this week’s features is putting the pedal to the metal. Letting you get all the info you need in a single glance – fast.

Let’s start with a couple of innovations in the quick view department. They don’t call it quick view for nothing, now do they? The idea is to pack all the essentials into one compact and efficient box.

This week we did it in two very important areas – catalogs and people. Do you have the time to sit back and enjoy our lovely new catalogs at your leisure? Great.  If you’re in a hurry though, why not use our new shiny quick view.

Click on a catalog once and you’ll get a compact nifty view of all the important stuff. The catalog’s cover, how many items are in it, their estimated value, creation date, relevant tags etc. You can enter the catalog and check out all the great stuff in it – or make an informed decision to follow it, look at its creator profile or add a tag.

Same goes for the user profile. See a user who seems interesting? Click on the dude, check out the quick view and learn a lot about him in no time at all. His catalogs, his pic against that sleek black background and a whole lot more.

What Was the Question?

Any questions so far? No? Good. And if we are on the subject: one of the cool things about ShopYourWay is the ability to ask questions and see other users’ questions and answers about products you’re interested in. So – we decided to speed things up here as well. From now on you’ll be able to see how many answers there are for a question about a product in one quick efficient glance. Again – it’s about getting the info you need, and fast.

Mobile and Friendly

Needless to say, when it comes to speed mobile is at the front, burning rubber. Did you Shopin lately? From now on there’ll be a clear indication of who shopped in with whom on the site’s newsfeed.

That’s not all: our mobile app now has hot deals – those time limited offers you just can’t miss – and a so much better product page. It’s got a variety of images and an indication of how many users liked it. Better be quick and decide. Speed is the name of the game.

Oh My, It Keeps Getting Awesomer

Monday, June 4th, 2012

By Avishay Lavie, Software Engineer at Sears Social

Oh hi there! It’s time for our weekly news update. Well, as you might expect, we’ve been hard at work improving the new experience, which is the formal corporate name for what we internally refer to as “Project Mega-Awesome”. This week brings a host of newly designed pages and components. Let’s take a quick tour around the exciting new stuff, shall we?

Tag, Store and Brand Pages Get Beefed Up

Brands, stores and tags got some serious treatment this week. For example, clicking the Questions tab will show you the questions and polls related to the topic at hand. You could help other users interested in the same things, or have some fun answering some polls about the stuff you care about, all without sacrificing the sparkly, fuzzy feeling of amazingness delivered by the new experience.

Hello!

Similarly, the newly-added Catalogs tab helps you find related catalogs, which in themselves are a great opportunity to get acquainted with some new users or skip that social nonsense entirely and dive directly into the hot new products. Plus, there’s that sudden surge of joy you feel when you see your own catalog featured on a tag page.

Lastly, if you’re a store, brand or tag administrator, you can now enjoy the new experience on the Settings tab. Defining newsfeed rules has never been so much fun.

Show a Newsfeed Story Where Credit is Due

We’re not resting on the newsfeed front either. Now you can get the credit you deserve when adding new products to ShopYourWay:

Are You Following This?

The Catalog also got a new tab. Click the Followers tab to see who’s following the catalog, with beautiful large images spread across the entire window. And they could have their own set of cool catalogs, each with its own followers… it’s a slippery slope, really. Except, well, this particular slope is actually a beautifully-designed, super-fun water slide. Yes.

The Fast and the Fabulous

So yeah, the new site has some real pretty pages. But why waste time waiting for pages to reload if you just want a quick impression of something? And while we’re at it, is there an excuse for that quick impression not to be as amazing as the rest of the site?

No. No there isn’t. That’s exactly what we told ourselves when we set out to design and build the new amazing quickviews.

The Catalog Quickview, for example, is a delicate balance of functionality and OMG PRETTY.

The image and video quickviews have less functionality to deal with, so they can focus on their sweet new looks.

Yes, our design team certainly knows what it’s doing out there in the small cubicle where we keep them. But don’t take my words and screenshots for it – go check everything out for yourself. We hope you’ll have as much fun using all these new features as we had building them. See you next time!

Full Steam Ahead

So – the cat is out of the bag, as we’ve told you last week. The site’s new design is now available for all users to experience, and as we promised, we’re going to keep rolling out more improvements and additions.

This week we’ve turned our attention to tag pages – brands, stores etc. Just take a look: Gone is the old single column newsfeed design. The new pages look sleek and modern, offering a much larger variety of items and stories across the page.

The old left navigation is gone as well, replaced by tabs – more convenient and takes up less space. Store pages get a nice display of store opening hours and a map, in case you need some directions.

Meanwhile catalogs get a boost as well, with a new catalog display, showing off some of the items in the catalog on the cover. Check out your catalogs display – it’s cool.

And yes – this is still far from over. We’re going to keep adding new amazing stuff on a weekly basis. We remind you again – all you have to do is click on that little button in the bottom left of the homepage that says “try the new experience”. A few of you guys will discover they were lucky and get the new design as their default version.

The new ShopYourWay is moving, full steam ahead. Get on board…

More Pages for You!

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

By Noam Reshef, Community Manager at ShopYourWay

It’s page frenzy over here: we keep rolling out new page types and connecting them all together.

What’s up this week? Well, we’ve got new special pages for places – that hotel you just stayed in for example, or your favorite Kmart store.

Park Hotel

We’ve also got topic pages, created automatically from stories in our site. Say we just published a story about redecorating houses. Want to learn more or discuss with fellow shoppers? Go to the newly created redecorating topic page. Great, isn’t it?

Not only that, but we’ll help you discover specific pages that we know you’ll like. You’ll get recommendations to follow pages according to your tastes and interests in the suggested activity box on the right rail. You’ll also see related pages in your favorite brand or clique page. It’s one smooth seamless experience

Games, Fun and Mobile

We didn’t mention sweepstakes for a while, but rest assured they’re still here and going strong. Check out the new ones we just uploaded – it’s fun!

Also, on mobile: you can now post stuff on your friends’ wall. You can also delete a status message you published with an elegant swipe of your finger. Almost makes you want to delete stuff for the heck of it. Enjoy!

The Rise of the Brand Pages

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

By Noam Reshef, Community Manager at ShopYourWay

Continuing last week’s momentum, we rolled out some more features enhancing the abilities of page admins across the site. We’re giving away super-powers here, people.

Handymen clique

This week is about inter-relations, and how things work together. Here we go: brand owners will now be able to post on other pages under the brand identity. Example: if you’re managing the Craftsman brand, and see a discussion on the Handymen clique page you can post a relevant status as the brand. Easy and practical.

Users get a say too: they can now tag catalogs, which will in turn appear under a special tab in the brand page. Say you created a catalog of your favorite EA video games and tagged it with the EA brand. Lo and behold: it will appear in the brand page, under the community catalogs tab.

That’s not all. You’ll start seeing recommendations for pages based on your actions on the site in the right rail. You’ll also start seeing links to related pages on your favorite brand page – all a part of our effort to make your life easier and more interesting.

Scan This

New on the mobile front: you can now use our app to scan QR codes – you know, those black and white rectangles that you scan with your smartphone to get all kind of nifty offers, videos etc directly to your phone. Start looking for those in Sears and Kmart stores.

Download our app!

The Inside Story

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

By Noam Reshef, Community Manager at ShopYourWay

Harmony: This week is about things fitting together, working in sync, and living peacefully together. We’re Zen like that.

Brand pages have been getting a lot of attention here lately, and rightly so. They’re cool, interesting, and at the very core of the site. That is why they got a nice upgrade: a lot more content. Our goal is to have every relevant piece of content interact and appear on the right brand page.

From now on, every story about a product will also be published in the appropriate brand page. A user wrote a review about a Kenmore freezer? It will automatically be published in the Kenmore brand page. A friend “liked” a new Adidas running shoe? You’ll be notified on the Adidas page.

And that’s not all. Brand page admins just got a lot more control over their pages: Admins can now control which stories get published on their pages, which in turn will enable them to make those pages so much more interesting.

Another very cool thing that admins can do is create brand catalogs. You’ll see product catalogs for various brands under a special tab in the brand page, all part of our ongoing initiative to turn these pages into the definitive hub for all things Kenmore, or Nike, or Craftsman.

EA catalogs

We’re only scratching the surface here. Think about the possibilities of letting users interact with these catalogs… exciting stuff indeed. Stay tuned.

You’ve Got the Power

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

By Noam Reshef, Community Manager at Sears Social

This week we’re launching a new feature that may, on first glance, appear minor. We’re letting users tag products. Sounds simple right? Every user will now be able to add a tag to every product according to his knowledge or taste. Are you an apple fan? You can add the tag “cool” to the iPhone 4s page. Care about the environment? Tag products as “green”.

The reason this is no small matter for us is that we see it as a small step towards an important goal. We want to hand over the decision making to you guys. Instead of us making all of the calls, we want to use your wisdom, knowledge and experience. After all, there are so many of you and so few of us, right?

Tagging products is just a part of this. You can already create catalogs, upload pictures and share videos. Now we want you to not only share your views and tastes, but actually take part in molding and changing the site and making it better for all users – and for you.

Mobile deals

Special Offers on Mobile

Shop Your Way Rewards users get another boost to their mobile experience. Now you check our cool iPhone app for special offers just for members. Browsing in a store? Whip out your mobile and see what’s hot.

And One More Beauty Item

That lovely new discover page we bragged about? Well it just got a little better. Browse the products on the page, and notice they now have a nice quick view enabling you to interact with the items you like. Nice.

Discover Your Inner Hero

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

By Noam Reshef, Community Manager at Sears Social

It’s 2012. The festivities are over, time to get back on track, and start fulfilling those New Year’s resolutions.

Our goals haven’t changed and we’re moving ahead at full steam. This week we’re adding another feature to our lovely brands, giving admins the ability to control banners – we call them Hero banners – on their brand page.

The brand owner will be able to upload up to 5 different images, giving him more control of the content and tone of his brand page, making it easier to stand out of the crowd. We want to let the brand admin have a real influence on the page, and mold it according to the brand’s values and image. The Hero banners are another important step in that direction.

Easy on the Eyes

Meanwhile we’re working on improving the site’s looks, and in a big way. There’s so much new stuff we don’t even know where to start. But here goes.

Discover

There’s a new product discovery page in town. Gone are the small formal pictures – feast your eyes on cool large images that just make you want to go click and explore. Check out the tabs on the top of the page – no more searching through menus, just click the right tab and see those products that really interest you. You can easily reach it by clicking that green link on the top right of the homepage. Enjoy.

We also changed the notification icon and added snazzy new icons to the left navigation. Each menu item now has a small stylish icon matching its function. Nice.

The next month is going to be hectic for us: we have big exciting plans for the site that will change and enhance the user experience dramatically. Stay tuned
