You’ve Got the Power

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

By Noam Resehf, Community Manager at Sears Social

This week we’re launching a new feature that may, on first glance, appear minor. We’re letting users tag products. Sounds simple right? Every user will now be able to add a tag to every product according to his knowledge or taste. Are you an apple fan? You can add the tag “cool” to the iPhone 4s page. Care about the environment? Tag products as “green”.

The reason this is no small matter for us is that we see it as a small step towards an important goal. We want to hand over the decision making to you guys. Instead of us making all of the calls, we want to use your wisdom, knowledge and experience. After all, there are so many of you and so few of us, right?

Tagging products is just a part of this. You can already create catalogs, upload pictures and share videos. Now we want you to not only share your views and tastes, but actually take part in molding and changing the site and making it better for all users – and for you.

Discover Your Inner Hero

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

It’s 2012. The festivities are over, time to get back on track, and start fulfilling those New Year’s resolutions.

Our goals haven’t changed and we’re moving ahead at full steam. This week we’re adding another feature to our lovely brands, giving admins the ability to control banners – we call them Hero banners – on their brand page.

The brand owner will be able to upload up to 5 different images, giving him more control of the content and tone of his brand page, making it easier to stand out of the crowd. We want to let the brand admin have a real influence on the page, and mold it according to the brand’s values and image. The Hero banners are another important step in that direction.

Easy on the Eyes

Meanwhile we’re working on improving the site’s looks, and in a big way. There’s so much new stuff we don’t even know where to start. But here goes.

Discover

There’s a new product discovery page in town. Gone are the small formal pictures – feast your eyes on cool large images that just make you want to go click and explore. Check out the tabs on the top of the page – no more searching through menus, just click the right tab and see those products that really interest you. You can easily reach it by clicking that green link on the top right of the homepage. Enjoy.

We also changed the notification icon and added snazzy new icons to the left navigation. Each menu item now has a small stylish icon matching its function. Nice.

The next month is going to be hectic for us: we have big exciting plans for the site that will change and enhance the user experience dramatically. Stay tuned

All Your Interests in One Place

We semi-secretly launched Tags a while ago, and we think that following tags can be a significant part in the way you tailor your Sears Social experience to suit your personal taste. But for this to happen, we’ll need to give you a way to manage the tags you’re following.

This week’s release adds just that, in the form of a new page called “my interests”. This lets you track and manage the categories and tags you find interesting, and provides a quick way to remove the ones you added by mistake that night when you logged in drunk (don’t worry, we’re totally cool with that).

Ideas & Know-How from Manage My Life

We’re experimenting with a new kind of content on Sears Social, powered by ManageMyLife.com. This week we’ll be adding some ideas and know-how advice to the newsfeed, like this one:

Let us know what you think!

More Recommendations

Speaking of newsfeed, remember this?

What’s missing here? That’s right, more recommendation options!

Don’t sweat it; we got this. There you go:

You’re welcome.

Smart Hiding, Smart Tags and Mobile Wisdom

Hide and Seek Just Got Better

Here’s a dilemma. You just saw a boring update in your Sears Social feed. It happens. Naturally, you want to hide it, and you want the system to remember that and not bother you again. The thing is, the story is about a subject you’re interested in, from a user you like – but the two just don’t mix.

For example – your grandmother recommend a movie. You like movie, and love grandma, but her taste in cinema – not so much. So what do you do? Up until now you could only hide all posts from granny or about movies. The new hide options will let you be specific. Starting next week, You will be able to hide stories form a specific user about a specific subject – and even determine for how long it will be hidden. Check it out.

Tags Just Got Faster

We just added a cool feature that will help your sore clicking finger: from now on when you see an interesting tag anywhere across the site all you have to do is point at it – a window with all the information and links that you need will magically appear. No clicking required.

You’ll see a description of the tag, how many people are following it and so on and be able to follow it yourself from that same window. Easy.

Polls Just Got Mobile.

iPhone users can now answer our amusing yet thought provoking polls about their hobbies, interests and shopping habits. See a question that’s relevant to you? Click an answer and see if other people voted in a similar way.

Don’t have our app on your iOs device yet? Get it here.

Tags, On-The-Go Promotions and a Place for All Your Cliques

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

Feature 3102 – codename “Tags”

We’ve started working on a new concept we call “tags”. It’s all pretty early experimental stuff so we can’t talk about it too much right now, but you might notice something like this on a product page:

We’re not saying anything, but it is theoretically possible that clicking this will lead you to a new page. But dude – you did not hear this from us.

More Newsfeed Stories in Mobile App

We added four new story types to the mobile app: now you can enjoy “Currently Trending on the Web”, “New Arrivals”, “Top Sellers” and “Let Us Introduce” on the go. Sweet!

But What Will I Do With All These Cliques?

We’ve been adding new cliques like madmen for the past few weeks. Most users would only join a handful of relevant cliques and remember which ones they joined, but for those of you who are Jacks-of-all-trades, we’ve added a handy “Cliques” page where you can review all the cliques you’re in. Now that we think of it, we should probably add a “Jack of all trades” clique. Hmm.

Oh, and there’s also a list of all the cliques, so you can easily review it whenever we add new ones. Like today, when we added 10 new cliques to the list. Go on, go find them. We’ll wait here, enjoying the fact we don’t need to make one of those clique-icon-collages again.
