Information Made Beautiful

By Noam Reshef, Community Manager at ShopYourWay

Hello there, curious readers. That’s why you come here, isn’t it? Hungry for knowledge, wanting to know what’s new?

But is it only cold hard facts you’re after? No, you say? Great.  This week we’ve got a really cool and amazing new feature for you: Infographics! Turning information from a dry fact into a fun ride. Here’s an example:

Whenever you click on a product the quick view lets you know how many fellow shoppers follow the product’s brand. This is cool. But click on “group insights” and suddenly the information takes on a new and lovely form.

Instead of just a number, you’ll see the age groups the various shoppers are part of, the different regions they come from, their gender – and all of that in the form of easy to get and fun to look at infographics.

Shoppers Little Helpers

This isn’t the only feature helping you get what you want in a friendly and easy on the eyes manner.  If you scroll down the homepage – and why wouldn’t you, it looks great – you’ll notice a new button on the bottom left titled “scroll to top”. Click it and it will bring you back to the top of the page, sparing your weary finger muscles and your mouse wheel some effort.

Another button designed to make your life easier is “new stories available”, which appears at the top of the newsfeed when, well, new stories are available. It’s our polite and helpful way to let you know there’s some new stuff worth checking out. Now click the button and check out the new stuff.

Seek and You Shall Find

Last but certainly not least: Search – arguably one of the most powerful tools in a shopper’s arsenal – just got way better. Type whatever you’re looking for into the search window, hit enter, and see the search results neatly divided into products, catalogs, people and media. Finding exactly what you want is now easier than ever.

Oh My, It Keeps Getting Awesomer

By Avishay Lavie, Software Engineer at Sears Social

Oh hi there! It’s time for our weekly news update. Well, as you might expect, we’ve been hard at work improving the new experience, which is the formal corporate name for what we internally refer to as “Project Mega-Awesome”. This week brings a host of newly designed pages and components. Let’s take a quick tour around the exciting new stuff, shall we?

Tag, Store and Brand Pages Get Beefed Up

Brands, stores and tags got some serious treatment this week. For example, clicking the Questions tab will show you the questions and polls related to the topic at hand. You could help other users interested in the same things, or have some fun answering some polls about the stuff you care about, all without sacrificing the sparkly, fuzzy feeling of amazingness delivered by the new experience.

Similarly, the newly-added Catalogs tab helps you find related catalogs, which in themselves are a great opportunity to get acquainted with some new users or skip that social nonsense entirely and dive directly into the hot new products. Plus, there’s that sudden surge of joy you feel when you see your own catalog featured on a tag page.

Lastly, if you’re a store, brand or tag administrator, you can now enjoy the new experience on the Settings tab. Defining newsfeed rules has never been so much fun.

Show a Newsfeed Story Where Credit is Due

We’re not resting on the newsfeed front either. Now you can get the credit you deserve when adding new products to ShopYourWay:

Are You Following This?

The Catalog also got a new tab. Click the Followers tab to see who’s following the catalog, with beautiful large images spread across the entire window. And they could have their own set of cool catalogs, each with its own followers… it’s a slippery slope, really. Except, well, this particular slope is actually a beautifully-designed, super-fun water slide. Yes.

The Fast and the Fabulous

So yeah, the new site has some real pretty pages. But why waste time waiting for pages to reload if you just want a quick impression of something? And while we’re at it, is there an excuse for that quick impression not to be as amazing as the rest of the site?

No. No there isn’t. That’s exactly what we told ourselves when we set out to design and build the new amazing quickviews.

The Catalog Quickview, for example, is a delicate balance of functionality and OMG PRETTY.

The image and video quickviews have less functionality to deal with, so they can focus on their sweet new looks.

Yes, our design team certainly knows what it’s doing out there in the small cubicle where we keep them. But don’t take my words and screenshots for it – go check everything out for yourself. We hope you’ll have as much fun using all these new features as we had building them. See you next time!

You’ve Got the Power

This week we’re launching a new feature that may, on first glance, appear minor. We’re letting users tag products. Sounds simple right? Every user will now be able to add a tag to every product according to his knowledge or taste. Are you an apple fan? You can add the tag “cool” to the iPhone 4s page. Care about the environment? Tag products as “green”.

The reason this is no small matter for us is that we see it as a small step towards an important goal. We want to hand over the decision making to you guys. Instead of us making all of the calls, we want to use your wisdom, knowledge and experience. After all, there are so many of you and so few of us, right?

Tagging products is just a part of this. You can already create catalogs, upload pictures and share videos. Now we want you to not only share your views and tastes, but actually take part in molding and changing the site and making it better for all users – and for you.

Mobile deals

Special Offers on Mobile

Shop Your Way Rewards users get another boost to their mobile experience. Now you check our cool iPhone app for special offers just for members. Browsing in a store? Whip out your mobile and see what’s hot.

And One More Beauty Item

That lovely new discover page we bragged about? Well it just got a little better. Browse the products on the page, and notice they now have a nice quick view enabling you to interact with the items you like. Nice.

It’s All About the View

It’s not like we’re shallow – but this week is all about eye candy. A vanity post, if you will.

Last week we told you about the new banners on brand pages, controlled by the page admins. No sooner did we release this capability, than the admins started to go wild with it. Check it out and click on the images to see the brand pages themselves:

Lego Star Wars

HBO SopranosHoly brand, Batman

That’s not all, in the looks department. We streamlined the site, going for elegance and panache. The search box is leaner and lovelier, and the status box is flatter and better looking. Plus, you can now share a product directly from it!

Interested in anything else?

Two other major improvements combine better looks with better functionality. Click on a product you like, or own, or think about owning. The product page now has recommendations for other products you may be interested in, related of course to the one you’re browsing. Relevant, smart and adds color to the page.

Also, the quick view layer is now present in even more areas of the site, enabling you to interact with the product of your choice without too many clicks. Comfort and style folks. That’s us.

The Mobile Way

And on the mobile front: if you’re a Shop Your Way Rewards member – rejoice! From now on you can carry your member card in your iPhone. It’s just permanently there. Pick some items, show your mobile to the associate when you pay – and get some points. Nice and easy.

Brands Moving Forward and More Sharing

By Noam Resehf, Community Manager at Sears Social

As we told you last week, brands are now up for grabs – users can try and claim brand ownership and control the brand page’s content. We started last week by letting users send in their brand ownership request. This week we’ve started adding owner capabilities.

Shop Your Way Rewards gets MGMT

If you’ll check out our brand pages you’ll start seeing changes. Owners will be able to publish stories as brands – stories that will appear in your newsfeed. So start following the brands you like, and see what surprising cool content pops up in your feed.

Share the joy

Share, and Do It Fast

‘Tis the season and everyone’s in a sugar coated mood. Accordingly, we made it even easier to share content with your Sears Social friends and spread the joy. First we added the ability to recommend from the quickview, now you can also share – who knows what we’ll think of next.

Activate, Link, Shop

We’re keeping up the good work on integrating Shop Your Way Rewards features into Sears Social. Now you can easily link your Shop Your Way Rewards account with your Sears Social one, or you’re your membership online. Redeemable points and social, oh my.

A Better View, the Buzz, and a Little Magic

Remember that nice quick view window we told you about last week? The one that lets you see all the info about a product without the hassle of going to a whole new page? Now you can use it to recommend a product to a friend. See that orange thumbs up icon? Click it and let your buddy know he should really buy that leaf blower.

The Buzz

We’ve got a new story type for you – what’s buzzing. Want to know what the latest news is? Let us do the research for you. We’ll check what the hottest topics on the internet are, find the latest relevant headlines, and let you search for related products on Sears Social. Just sit back and read.

it's buzzzzzing

The Trends

The “now trending” feature at Sears Social holds a few interesting surprises. Basically it lets you in on what people are talking about on the site – and apparently they’re talking about some interesting stuff.

Take this magic wand for example. It’s really a remote control that can “learn” the infrared codes of up to 13 remotes and assign them to predefined gestures. The bottom line: you wave your wand around ant the TV’s turned on! How cool is that?

Faster, Stronger, and Some Deals

You’re a busy (or perhaps a lazy) user. You don’t have time (or energy) for clicking through page after page. And since we’re here to indulge your every whim, we made things a little easier for you.

Let’s say you just saw an interesting product in your news feed. Hover over the product picture with your mouse. See that magnifying glass icon? Click on it, don’t be afraid. And presto! You get a nice window with all the information you need, enabling you to buy the product, add it to a catalog and whatnot. How great is that.

We Give the Orders Around Here

Remember that cool shirt you bought, using your Shop Your Way Rewards points? Feel like sharing with the world how good it makes you look? Or recommending it to a friend?  Well don’t hold yourself back. Go to your Shop Your Way Rewards history and check out your orders. You can easily see all the stuff you bought – and interact with it. Yes, we know, it’s cool.

Sizzling Hot Deals

Get them while they’re hot: we’ve got great deals for you, popping up in your newsfeed. We’re talking online, and we’re talking low prices. Look for them on a computer screen near you.
