You’ve Got the Power

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

By Noam Resehf, Community Manager at Sears Social

This week we’re launching a new feature that may, on first glance, appear minor. We’re letting users tag products. Sounds simple right? Every user will now be able to add a tag to every product according to his knowledge or taste. Are you an apple fan? You can add the tag “cool” to the iPhone 4s page. Care about the environment? Tag products as “green”.

The reason this is no small matter for us is that we see it as a small step towards an important goal. We want to hand over the decision making to you guys. Instead of us making all of the calls, we want to use your wisdom, knowledge and experience. After all, there are so many of you and so few of us, right?

Tagging products is just a part of this. You can already create catalogs, upload pictures and share videos. Now we want you to not only share your views and tastes, but actually take part in molding and changing the site and making it better for all users – and for you.

It’s All About the View

It’s not like we’re shallow – but this week is all about eye candy. A vanity post, if you will.

Last week we told you about the new banners on brand pages, controlled by the page admins. No sooner did we release this capability, than the admins started to go wild with it. Check it out and click on the images to see the brand pages themselves:

Lego Star Wars

HBO SopranosHoly brand, Batman

That’s not all, in the looks department. We streamlined the site, going for elegance and panache. The search box is leaner and lovelier, and the status box is flatter and better looking. Plus, you can now share a product directly from it!

Interested in anything else?

Two other major improvements combine better looks with better functionality. Click on a product you like, or own, or think about owning. The product page now has recommendations for other products you may be interested in, related of course to the one you’re browsing. Relevant, smart and adds color to the page.

Also, the quick view layer is now present in even more areas of the site, enabling you to interact with the product of your choice without too many clicks. Comfort and style folks. That’s us.

The Mobile Way

And on the mobile front: if you’re a Shop Your Way Rewards member – rejoice! From now on you can carry your member card in your iPhone. It’s just permanently there. Pick some items, show your mobile to the associate when you pay – and get some points. Nice and easy.

Nike brand page

And this is just the beginning. We plan to let brand owners have more and more control over brand pages and the user experience. Changing logos, adding outside links, creating user activities and communicating with the community – it’s all coming soon to a brand page near you. we even set up a nice and easy guide for brand owners. We’re that nice.

We got some new and cool stories for you – search your feed and ye shall find the latest headlines about the newest most desired gadgets around. Find out what’s happening with the new iPhone, the Galaxy Nexus or the Kindle Fire – and check their prices right here at Sears Social.

Some exciting news this week: we are starting to reach out and let you share stuff from other sites on your newsfeed.

What does that mean? Well now you can be a good friend and share stuff with your Sears Social buddies from other sites, and not just directly from Sears Social.

The first site enabling this is naturally Sears.com. In the Sears.com homepage click on “New Local Ad”, choose a store you like and pick a product. Now click “Share this item”. Wait for it… and lo and behold – you can share the item to Sears Social! Amazing.

Your History and Let’s Chat

Two new items on the mobile front: You can now go through your Shop Your Way Rewards history in your iPhone, which is very convenient if you’re on the move a lot. We also upgraded our chat, making notifications clickable, and letting you know how many times your friend tried to reach you – now you’ll know how annoyed he’ll be when you finally get back to him.

It’s the details that count. This week is about fine tuning and streamlining. Making things work a little smoother.

Up until now you could have followed your favorite store page to see what’s new and interesting. Now you and your friends will also be able to see which stores you checked into in the past, and share useful info and shopping stories. Nice.

Another week, another quick view improvement: we’re really trying to help you go easy on your clicking finger. Now the quick view window includes a review button. Got an opinion on a product? Click it and share your thoughts with the rest of us.

If You Want To Chat, Chat – Don’t Talk

A long long time ago a phone was something you spoke into, and heard someone on the other side respond. But let’s not get nostalgic: this week we’re taking chat to the mobile’s front. Fire up our App and You’ll see a big nice chat button on your screen (don’t have our App? Download it! It’s cool). And that’s it. You can just start chatting away.

Another improvement on the mobile front: Shop Your Way Rewards members can now see their account info on their iPhones as well as on the web. Sweet.

Happy Holidays

Thanksgiving is almost upon us. If you’re into the Holidays, come and join one of our holiday cliques. We’ve got Holiday Cooks, for you kitchen dwellers, and Football Lovers, for those who can’t wait for the big game on TV. Join and share your recipes, favorite clips and more. Happy Thanksgiving!

Mobile, Local and a Little Friendly Help

Mobile is cool. Mobile is the future, maybe even the present. Why are we so excited about mobile this week, you ask? Because of a little something we call post-shopin, meaning the great and wonderful things that will happen after you sign into one of our stores.

Up until now you could have shopped in to let the world know you’re in a specific store. Now things start to get interesting: your mobile phone will basically bridge the gap between the brick and mortar stores of the old world and the virtual ones of the internet. The result is a new and unique experience.

After shopping in you’ll be able to chat with a Sears associate who’ll help you find exactly what you need. You’ll get info on the hottest deals the store has to offer, and the sage advice of other shoppers regarding stuff like parking, nearby restaurants etc. it’s adding a little online spice to your real world shopping.

Hot Deals Nearby

Our store pages just got smarter. Click on one of them and you’ll discover what specific deals your store of choice has to offer. Following that store near your house or near your place of work suddenly seems like the right thing to do, eh?

Friendly Recommendations

We can’t seem to stop tinkering with the product quick view, concentrating all possible product related actions in one place. Now you can take a quick look at a product – hover over its picture and click the quick view button – and decide you want to know what your friends think about it. Click the “help me choose” button and get some valuable input from your buddies.

The Shop Your Way Link

Did you sign into Sears Social with Facebook Connect? Still want to use your Shop Your Way Rewards points (naturally!)? Now you can. Click the “link your account” link in the Shop Your Way Rewards box on the left side of the page. There you go.

We want to make life simpler for you. Easier. For example: why should you try so hard to remember what you bought, and how much you spent? Shouldn’t someone as busy as you have some help with that?

Well, here we are, ready to assist as ever. We just added a page with your full Shop Your Way Rewards history, giving you an extremely detailed account of your actions, the points you’ve earned and everything else you could possibly want to know.

Scare Us, Please

Last week we told you about the new Halloween cliques, and this week we’re taking it a little further. Notice the new holiday activities box on the top right? Each time we have special holiday activities – contests and what not – we’ll use this lovely spot to let you know it’s happening. So for starters, tell us about the scariest book you’ve read, share a clip from your favorite horror movie, or upload a cool in costume pic.

Knowledge is Power

We just made your news feed that much more helpful. Check out the new ManageMyLife stories – they’ll tell you how to get in shape, rake leaves from your yard or save gas while driving your car. Practical and interesting.

Mobile, You Ask?

We’re iOs5 compatible now. Just give our app a try and see.

My Brands, My Local Deals — and Everybody’s Holiday Cliques

My Brands, Your Brands

This week is about making it a little more personal. We told you about brands before, and how you can follow the ones you like. Now you can check out our new “My Brands” page and see all of your favorites in one place.

Better yet: go over to one of your friend’s profile page and check out what his favorite brands are. Maybe you’ll discover you missed some cool ones. Or maybe you’ll suddenly decide you need some new friends.

I Got Your Deals Right Here

On the mobile front we’ve added one of the hottest buzzwords around the web – local. Now you’ll be able to check out special deals near you, and even get a heads up if the product you’re browsing happens to be on sale.

Scary Cliques

Halloween is creeping just around the (haunted) corner, and we’re getting ready for it. We launched two new cliques – Ghostbusters, for you horror lovers out there, and Trick or Treaters, for you guys who actually intend to dress up and demand candies, or wait at home ready to supply the sweets and snacks.

The new cliques will be where holiday activities take place: you’re more than welcome to share your pictures, videos and holiday related experiences on the new Halloween cliques.

Smart Hiding, Smart Tags and Mobile Wisdom

Hide and Seek Just Got Better

Here’s a dilemma. You just saw a boring update in your Sears Social feed. It happens. Naturally, you want to hide it, and you want the system to remember that and not bother you again. The thing is, the story is about a subject you’re interested in, from a user you like – but the two just don’t mix.

For example – your grandmother recommend a movie. You like movie, and love grandma, but her taste in cinema – not so much. So what do you do? Up until now you could only hide all posts from granny or about movies. The new hide options will let you be specific. Starting next week, You will be able to hide stories form a specific user about a specific subject – and even determine for how long it will be hidden. Check it out.

Tags Just Got Faster

We just added a cool feature that will help your sore clicking finger: from now on when you see an interesting tag anywhere across the site all you have to do is point at it – a window with all the information and links that you need will magically appear. No clicking required.

You’ll see a description of the tag, how many people are following it and so on and be able to follow it yourself from that same window. Easy.

Polls Just Got Mobile.

iPhone users can now answer our amusing yet thought provoking polls about their hobbies, interests and shopping habits. See a question that’s relevant to you? Click an answer and see if other people voted in a similar way.

Don’t have our app on your iOs device yet? Get it here.
