Even More News! Literally

By Noam Reshef, Community Manager at ShopYourWay

This week We’re proud to present two important pages that got a major face lift and look oh-so much better. First there’s the partners page, which includes links to third parties collaborating with the SHOP YOUR WAY REWARDS program. They offer great deals to REWARDS members – a special benefit just for you…

Our Partners

Then there’s the account history page, showing SHOP YOUR WAY REWARDS members all of their purchase information in sharp black and white. Both pages look excellent!

The Latest (Additional) News

This is a bit confusing, as this blog is about the latest stuff on the site, i.e. news. But one of our new features is, well, even more news!

Way back when we added a new story type to the site – the buzz around consumer electronics. We brought you – and still do – all you need to know about the latest and newest items and trends. And since we liked it so much, we decided to take the next step and expand to other areas.

Starting now you’ll see on your feed the latest news about Health issues, Food and Groceries and Beauty. Our trusty algorithms are scouring the web to bring you all you need to know about how to eat well, stay healthy and look great. And this is just the beginning – we’ve got more on the way.

It’s About You

We’ve been hard at work on the profile page, and have got some cool stuff to show for it: the about tab. The idea is to present all the information you may need about the user in one place. It includes some personal info on the fellow shopper you’re visiting, some info on his activities on the site, some mutual friends and his catalogs.

It's what it's all about

Our goal is to help our users easily find fellow shoppers with similar tastes and interests, and make new friends. This is just the first step – the about tab is going to get even better – and soon.

And finally, a nifty new feature – clicking on brands in the left navigation will now open special menu top brands, as the default option, instead of directing you to a completely new page. It’s a small yet important change.

That’s it for now. Stay tuned.

Hey, It’s The New You

This week’s update is special – it’s basically about you. Yes, you. See, we’ve gone and turned your profile page into a new and wonderful thing, and we’re excited.

Gone is the old timid page of yesterday. The new profile page is slick and cool. It’s aligned with the rest of the different pages on the site, keeping things consistent and pretty. And most importantly – it’s easy to navigate and extremely functional.

Check it out: your basic info is on top, next to your profile picture – how many people follow you, the number of catalogs you own etc.

Under that you’ll find the tabs. First is recent activity – all the stuff you’ve been up to lately, plus the ability to post a status message, photo, video or product. Next to it is the personal info tab that lets you edit the info you present about yourself.

Next comes the catalogs tab, giving you access and control over your collection. and last but not least, there’s the “more” menu, that lets you tinker with the insides of the machine. See who asked to follow you, edit your personal details and so much more.

This is just the beginning: the profile page is going to get even better, giving you all the info and control you could possibly want. Oh yes.

And a New Way in

Speaking of slick and pretty: we’ve got a new sign in/register process, and it’s short and sweet. The screens are cleaner and clearer. The process itself is shorter and easier to complete. It’s like we built a shiny new highway leading to our place, so you all can come visit.

So come in and enjoy the site. Bring your friends along.

And stay tuned.

Keeping it Simple

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

Notice anything new on the site? Take a look at your newsfeed – not quite the same right? Right. We added a little something we like to call a “sticky” right rail. Why? Because it sticks to the top right of the newsfeed and doesn’t let go! It’s like Spiderman up there.

Right now you can find some suggested activities just for you on the right rail. That’s right: our incredibly smart system personalizes these recommendations according to your tastes and preferences on the site.

So check it out – and stay tuned for some more cool features in that sticky real estate.

That’s not the only thing we’ve been working on, of course. There’s a small but crucial improvement we implemented in our search engine: searching for pages.

When you search for something, you’ll notice a tab called – surprise – pages. Clicking on it will show you all pages relevant to your search query. Simple and easy to use.

It’s Multiplying!

Speaking of pages, if you’re managing one, you’ll be happy to know that it’s now easier to share the load. Page admins can now add more admins from the settings page, letting anyone in their friends list edit the page, and do whatever it is admins do. Go on, don’t be shy. Invite some friends over to manage your page.

And finally, let’s talk about design and good looks. First of all we made a small but important adjustment to infographics – that cool tool that lets us show you interesting info through nifty visuals. Take a look and you’ll see we added some additional helpful info to the feature.

And finally – we added some pre-designed images to our category pages. And they do look awesome. Check it out – and stay tuned!

It’s All About the View

By Noam Reshef, Community Manager at Sears Social

It’s not like we’re shallow – but this week is all about eye candy. A vanity post, if you will.

Last week we told you about the new banners on brand pages, controlled by the page admins. No sooner did we release this capability, than the admins started to go wild with it. Check it out and click on the images to see the brand pages themselves:

Lego Star Wars

HBO SopranosHoly brand, Batman

That’s not all, in the looks department. We streamlined the site, going for elegance and panache. The search box is leaner and lovelier, and the status box is flatter and better looking. Plus, you can now share a product directly from it!

Interested in anything else?

Two other major improvements combine better looks with better functionality. Click on a product you like, or own, or think about owning. The product page now has recommendations for other products you may be interested in, related of course to the one you’re browsing. Relevant, smart and adds color to the page.

Also, the quick view layer is now present in even more areas of the site, enabling you to interact with the product of your choice without too many clicks. Comfort and style folks. That’s us.

The Mobile Way

And on the mobile front: if you’re a Shop Your Way Rewards member – rejoice! From now on you can carry your member card in your iPhone. It’s just permanently there. Pick some items, show your mobile to the associate when you pay – and get some points. Nice and easy.

By Avishay Lavie, Software Engineer at Sears Social

This release’s most prominent feature is a surprise. I’m not going to tell you what it is. Just go take a look at Sears Social (the website, not the blog) and tell me what’s different.

(I’m waiting…)

Got it? No, we haven’t dyed our hair, but nice try. Alright, I’ll tell you: it’s the layout.

Although we’re always adding features to Sears Social, we can’t help but notice the slow but consistent increase in clutter that they bring. So, while we’re still working hard on those new features, we’re also working on re-designing the site’s layout so that it’ll be cleaner, prettier and more intuitive. This in turn allows us to add more awesome features, which would eventually warrant another re-design. What can we say? It’s a vicious cycle of awesomeness.

The main difference in the new design is the cleaned up navigation bar at the top. We stripped the navigation bar to the bare essentials, removing most of the navigation options (don’t worry, they’ve been relocated to the sidebar) and replacing some text buttons with pleasantly-looking icons:

Another important change is the addition of “Like it”, “Want it” and “Have it” buttons on the product page, next to a matching “Add to Catalog” button. Now you can instantly tell the world you like, want or own a product directly from its product page, as well as from your newsfeed (which is old news). Go wild.

This layout change is just a small step, and of course we’ll continue to adjust and tweak the site’s design in the coming weeks. As always, we’d love to hear what you think about it. Do you find it easier to find stuff? Is there anything you’re used to using that you can’t find anymore? Tell us about it!
